Medellin 2013 #2 (Poblado Barrio)

The city is broken up into many barrios (neighborhoods) which I believe are really municipalities. I only been able to explore a few and plan on expanding my efforts to the lesser traveled (by tourist) barrios in the future. Poblado is the principal tourist area and therefore the wealthiest part of Medellin.

It has a large commercial/retail zone nicknamed the "mila de oro" or golden mile. Most residences are condo towers but private homes are scattered throughout the barrio. The streets are landscaped with trees and parks, big and small, which allow for an abundance of shade during those warm sunny afternoons. Walking around this barrio is considered safe but you should always keep your street smarts engaged. Sidewalks, nature trails and creeks are numerous in the neighborhood and I recommend exploring them if your time allows. The number of cafes, bars and shops could keep you exploring for weeks as this is one of the more trendy areas of the city. International cuisine is easily found and centered around Parque Lleras off Avenida 10. Artisans can be found hawking their creations in the area. The park has plenty of shade and is a welcomed rest spot for workers and tourists.

I have tried several eateries in this area and have enjoyed all my meals so far. I even found a quality microbrew called 3 Cordilleras served in several of the local bars and some grocery stores. I enjoyed the Mulata, which is an amber ale.

The Medellin Beer Factory is my current locale for sampling the local brews.

The Eco Bar is a popular outdoor, dress down, casual kinda place to meet locals who want to meet foreigners. Unfortuanely it is closed during the day when I go exploring. As hard as some of you might find this to believe, I do not spend much time clubbing......yet.

Colombia Mia is a souvenir shop on Ave 10. The selection in the shop is excellent and the staff very friendly. After visiting the open markets that are found in the city center the prices in this shop are competitively priced and many times with better quailty items.
